“Mr” Mathews was appointed as a Private Eye Consultant at Stanley Eye Unit, Abergele in 2009. After successfully graduating medical school, he went on to train in ophthalmology at Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai, India. He then went on to train further in the United Kingdom at the Royal Eye Hospital, Manchester. He underwent subspecialty training in Medical retina at the Manchester University Hospital under Prof. Paulo Stanga. 

He took up the lead role for the management of medical retinal pathology at Stanley Eye Unit in 2009.  He has worked to establish new models of medical retina care across the region. He is in the process of setting up shared care retinal service across North Wales.

He specialises in retinal disorders that require medical treatment, such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy and maculopathy, retinal vein occlusions, ocular trauma and cataract surgery.  Part of this management includes laser therapy and intravitreal anti-VEGF therapies.

Mr Mathews has a longstanding interest in medical education and training. He is extensively involved in the teaching of optometrists, General practitioners and nurses.

Mrs Mathews was appointed as a Private Eye Consultant at Stanley Eye Unit, Abergele in 2009. She trained in general ophthalmology initially at Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai, India. She then went on to train further in the UK at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital. She underwent subspecialty training in glaucoma at the Manchester University Hospital, and undertook a fellowship period in Warrington Eye Hospital to train under Mrs. Wishart who was one of the pioneers in “Non- Penetrating” surgery in the UK.
She has set up non penetrating surgery in Abergele but also performs penetrating glaucoma surgery, MIGS procedures and Glaucoma Tube surgery. She now performs over 200 Viscocanalostomy a year at Stanley eye unit. She has recently published and presented her results at various meetings across the UK and internationally. She is senior Glaucoma Consultant for North wales and has worked to establish new models of glaucoma care across the region. She has also trained nurse practitioners to create a team to lead the development of shared care in glaucoma. She has been involved in establishing 3 Ophthalmic Diagnostic across north wales.as a part of this shared care scheme.

The Glaucoma unit has 1 fellowship attracting national and international candidates. The unit has also recently acquired recognition by the Royal college of Ophthalmologists for TSC in
Glaucoma. Mrs Mathews has a particular interest in teaching and training and has been responsible for conducting Wet-lab sessions for non-penetrating surgery to train other consultants across the UK (in the North at Warrington , Manchester and in the South in Surrey). Mrs Mathews is regularly invited to lecture on glaucoma surgery around the country and Internationally.

She has presented and published both nationally and internationally.

    Mr Jonathan Bhargava a Consultant ophthalmic surgeon with specialist expertise in cataract surgery, oculoplastic and lacrimal surgery.

    I have a particular special interest in cataract surgery. I perform safe, efficient, injection free cataract surgery. I run a dedicated cataract assessment clinic on Monday afternoons that is able to offer safe, efficient surgery within days.

    I have recently been appointed to the position of ‘Chair of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists Cataract Workforce Guidance Committee’ that aims to provide a nationwide gold standard for cataract treatment which is an extremely exciting project to deliver safe, efficient and sustainable cataract services for the future.

    I also run a busy oculoplastic service at the Countess of Chester Hospital. I offer extensive expertise and experience in the treatment of all eyelid (droopy/saggy eyelids, blepharitis, eyelid lesions etc.) and watery eye conditions including surgical solutions.

    I also practices general ophthalmology including the medical management of glaucoma and many other conditions.

    I believe in offering a service of the highest quality to all my patients and giving every patient the time that they require for their consultation.

      Joey Cazabon is a Consultant Ophthalmologist, Cataract and Vitreoretinal Surgeon. He completed his Ophthalmic surgical training at St Paul’s Eye Unit, Liverpool in 2006. In addition, he has undertaken a year of specialist Vitreoretinal surgical fellowship training at Oxford Eye Hospital.

      He worked as a Consultant Vitreoretinal Surgeon at Oxford Eye Hospital and Southampton University Hospital before relocating to Chester in 2008. He established the Medical and Surgical Retinal Unit at the Countess of Chester Hospital when he was appointed as a consultant in 2008.

      He continually audits his own practice to maintain the highest standards of medical and surgical care.

      His surgical expertise encompasses all aspects of vitreoretinal surgery including micro-incisional techniques as well as sutureless cataract surgery. He has particular expertise in macular hole surgery, retinal detachment surgery, epiretinal membrane surgery, diabetic eye disease, age-related macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusion and successful treatment for floaters.

        Ms Hulpus is a Consultant Ophthalmologist specialising in cornea, ocular surface disease and cataract surgery. She works as a consultant at Abergele Hospital, Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board NHS where, together with her team, she delivers the specialised cornea and ocular surface disease service to whole of North Wales.

        She specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions like dry eyes, keratoconus, corneal dystrophies, infections, pterygium and other ocular surface diseases. Surgically, she performs cataract surgery, full thickness, and lamellar corneal transplantation (DALK, DSAEK, DMEK), cross-linking, pterygium surgery and YAG laser. She is experienced in operating both routine and complex cataract cases.

        In addition to her clinical activities, Ms Hulpus is involved in clinical research projects with the University of Liverpool. She is also a clinical supervisor for the Ophthalmology trainees in the Wales Deanery.

        Ms Hulpus trained in Ophthalmology in the UK. In 2015 she joined the Specialist Training Programme UK and trained in Ophthalmology in the North West Deanery. She further specialised in cornea and ocular surface disease by completing a one year Trainee Selected Component and a 14 month fellowship in this subspeciality, at Liverpool University Hospital.
        Prior to this, she graduated the medical university in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Her very good academic results were rewarded with several scholarships for studying abroad and she also qualified amongst the first 1% at the national residency examination.

        Ms Hulpus puts the patient at the centre of her practice. She believes in good, clear communication, empowering the patients to make the best decisions for their care. Her practice is evidence based, safe and tailored to the patient’s needs.
